Check 21
You may have heard recent news regarding a new Federal law called Check 21 for the 21st Century Act or "Check 21". The 09/11/01 attacks interrupted normal banking procedures; as a result, Check 21 was proposed and by October 28, 2004, this government-mandated law will impact all financial institutions even if the bank does not change the way they process checks. Check 21 makes it legal for financial institutions to accept a digital image of your original check. If the image is converted back to paper it is called a "substitute check". 

A substitute check is the legal equivalent of your original check. After October 28, 2004, every financial institution in the country will have to accept substitute checks. Sevier County Bank will still be processing your checks and statements in the same manner, but others may convert your original checks and if so, you will receive a substitute check in your statement. 

This substitute check will be about the size of a business check and the law requires the financial institution creating it must warrant its accuracy.
